Definition
Custom software is built around a specific company's processes instead of forcing those processes into a standard product. It is chosen when the workflow is a competitive differentiator, when integration depth matters, or when licence and workaround costs exceed the build.
The honest comparison is not licence price versus project price, but total cost over several years including workarounds, manual bridging work and lost throughput.
Sensible practice is hybrid: standard products for commodity functions, custom software exactly where the company's own process lives.
